One of the best ways to avoid unplanned kinetic disassembly of equipment (that is, “it blew up”!) is with periodic physical inspections. This is also the best way to ensure compliance with local government regulations regarding broadcast facilities. In the United States, the Alternate Broadcast Inspection Program (ABIP) was created in the late 1980s to help accomplish this. While it’s aimed at regulatory compliance, it’s also useful to help point out situations that may require solutions.
We’re joined in this session by John George of RF Specialties South, who has been an ABIP inspector in many states for years. We’ll talk about the finer points of site inspection, both from regulatory and reliability points of view and hopefully pass along some ideas of what to look for the next time you head up the mountain!.
