Did you Know?

Nautel still services every model of transmitter it’s ever manufactured. Spanning over 40 years, this visibly demonstrates our commitment to our customers. A portion of Nautel engineering time is spent re-engineering assemblies where parts are no longer available, to keep these older transmitters up and running.

“With the amazing support of Nautel’s customer service and technical staff the assembly went smoothly and since 1999 we have experienced very little trouble and maximum help.”

Nautel’s Long-term Service and Support Pays Off for KSHN

A million years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth – well actually 1979 or 1980 – I wanted very badly to move our am transmitter site to a more strategic position for better coverage. To prepare a move application I needed a transmitter to run coverage tests on an adjacent frequency. I had never before tried to find a variable frequency am transmitter and it proved difficult. I literally called around the world, week after week, trying to rent one that I could get shipped here to southeast Texas for our little 250 watt am radio station. No success.

I called Nautel and asked if they rented transmitters and the answer was a polite no. Later, at the point I was about to give up, a friend suggested calling Nautel again but this time ask for Jorgen Jensen, the company’s sales and marketing manager. “Tell him what you are doing and the fact that you can barely cover your city of license. He will understand the importance.” What the heck, I thought, I might as well.

So, I invested in one more long-distance phone call to Nova Scotia and within minutes I was talking to Jorgen Jensen and telling him my story. He said “we don’t rent but hold on a minute – we do have one transmitter we loan temporarily to Nautel customers who have a major problem.” Soon he came back on the line and let me know that the loaner was in Oklahoma and that the broadcaster had just finished using it. Luckily the engineer hired to run our tests was near that part of the country and I arranged for him to go and pick it up.

We set up the easy-to-ship, 1000 watt Nautel transmitter with variable frequency and power at the site we wanted to move to and ran our tests. Back in 1979 or 80 this poor boy had never seen the like! When the tests were completed I called Nautel and asked for shipping instructions. I was given an authorization number, called the freight company and it was picked up. Later when I learned we had not in fact paid for the shipping I called Nautel and learned that Jensen had said “we’ve got it covered – maybe you will need a transmitter sometime.” When I asked about the rental of it they said, “Have a nice day, Jorgen said not to worry.” Wow!!! Being the poor boy that I was at that time, I didn’t have the opportunity to buy a new transmitter but I never forgot that kindness.

Years later in 1991, I put our new FM station on the air with the customary used transmitter and a promise that when I could afford it I would replace it with a new one. In 1999 we had paid off the station note and were doing well. Service was becoming more of an issue though so we started researching a new transmitter. Remembering the kindness I was afforded 20 years earlier, the first number I called was Nautel. I still couldn’t afford to pay an arm and a leg so even though I had only heard good things about Nautel I called two other companies. If the Nautel price was within a few hundred dollars of the lowest I was going with Nautel. Jorgen Jensen compassionate words still rang in my ear.

When the prices were on my desk the Nautel FM10 transmitter was not only technically superior to the others but about $700 under the next best price so we went ahead and purchased it. We had never assembled a new transmitter before as I had always bought used models already put together. However, with the amazing support of Nautel’s customer service and technical staff the assembly went smoothly and since 1999 we have experienced very little trouble and maximum help.

Thank you Nautel. I have told this story to others and two much bigger companies have since purchased over 30 Nautel transmitters and are huge fans of your equipment and your support.
