Did you Know?

Nautel still services every model of transmitter it’s ever manufactured. Spanning over 40 years, this visibly demonstrates our commitment to our customers. A portion of Nautel engineering time is spent re-engineering assemblies where parts are no longer available, to keep these older transmitters up and running.

“Hearing about the reputation of a company that designs and builds transmitters with utmost reliability and redundant circuits at competitive prices convinced us to buy.”

My Nautel Transmitter – Over 20 years Old and So Reliable I Still Have the Original Box of Spare Parts!

My story highlights the dependability of a Nautel transmitter with built-in protection that keeps it on the air so reliably.

Back in 1989 our search for a transmitter to replace our aging and failing Gates put us in contact with Don Jones of RF Specialties of Texas. He told us about the Nautel transmitters that are built with no tubes! Hearing about the reputation of a company that designs and builds transmitters with utmost reliability and redundant circuits at competitive prices convinced us to buy the Nautel Ampfet 5.

After the Ampfet 5 was a couple of years old, we moved to a new transmitter site. During the installation, someone forgot to hook the phasor mute signal into the transmitter control chain. The antenna pattern was switching with the transmitter putting out 5.3 KW! The VSWR protection built-in to the Nautel transmitter was so quick that the output transistors were not damaged. I didn’t discover this oversight until TWO years (and a thousand pattern changes) later and immediately rectified it. Unbelievably, there was no damage done and the transmitter still keeps on working to this day in spite of being so mistreated in its youth.

Because of the extreme reliability of Nautel products, I have since installed an FM 3 and a V 7.5 at our other two stations. Those units have not disappointed me in the quality of service they provide. I only need to remember to go out and change the air filters every so often. The other parts just keep on working.

Today, my twenty-something year old Ampfet 5 (5 kilowatt AM) transmitter has proved so reliable that I still have the original box of spare parts that was purchased with the unit. Whilst there have been problems (every few years something would happen) the Nautel Technical Support staff were very helpful and courteous regardless of the time of day (or night) I called. Usually a quick module swap would correct the problem. If I sent the module in for repairs, there was never any hassle and the turnaround was quick — though I wouldn’t need to do this for a long, long time.

When I’m called in as a consultant to work on other transmitters, I really appreciate the Nautel transmitters. Brand X, used in several stations around the area, is so finicky and needs so much attention that you wonder why anyone would spend more money just to buy so many headaches when they could have purchased a Nautel.

I don’t hesitate to recommend Nautel transmitters to anyone, and everyone, who is considering a new transmitter.
