Hackett’s Cove, Nova Scotia — Nautel Limited has again been recognized for the company’s transmission technologies at the National Association of Broadcasters convention, which was held this month in Las Vegas, Nevada. Five awards were presented to Nautel: two were presented for Nautel’s ‘asymmetrical sideband’ method of increasing digital transmission levels while protecting adjacent channel broadcasters, and the new VS Series of low power transmitters garnered three awards.
Nautel’s Asymmetrical Sideband technology was selected for a “Cool Stuff” Award by Radio World magazine and a TechINK Innovation Award by RadioInk magazine. This technology comprises a suite of proprietary algorithms which permit broadcasters to address adjacent channel interference by accommodating the full -10 dBc HD Radio™ signal on one sideband while keeping the other sideband at more conservative -14 dBc injection levels. Asymmetrical Sideband technology (subject to FCC approval) is a capability of Nautel’s HD PowerBoost suite of technologies that can provide a marked increase in power output (up to 30% improvement) and up to 7% gains in transmitter efficiency in HD Hybrid transmission modes.
The VS Series of low power FM transmitters was honored by three magazines, receiving a Cool Stuff award from Radio World, a Pick Hit award from Radio magazine and a TechINK Innovation Award from RadioInk. VS Series products offer many industry firsts for transmitters of any size including IP Audio I/O, Livewire™ support, Orban Inside™ option, an integrated digital exciter, and USB playout engine for local playlists. VS Series transmitters are compact (as small as 1 RU) and offer power levels ranging from 300 watts to 2.5 kW; Nautel’s exclusive Advanced User Interface (AUI) is also provided. All VS Series transmitters may be upgraded to HD Radio™ or DRM+® operation. The VS300 is also recommended by Nautel as a replacement for aging analog exciters. Scheduled to begin shipping within the next few weeks, more than 200 units have already been sold.
“Cool Stuff awards are selected by a panel of expert radio broadcast engineers,” said Paul McLane, Radio World Editor. “Products and technologies selected are notable for their design, features, cost efficiency and performance in serving radio broadcast users. We congratulate Nautel for being selected for both a new product and a new technology.”
“Only 15 ‘Pick Hit’ awards are presented each year, which maintains the value and prestige of the award,” said Chriss Scherer, Editor of Radio magazine. “In addition, our judges follow a strict set of rules and make their selections independently and anonymously, which is a further testimony to the proven value of the award to radio broadcasters.”
NAB 2010 was the first year for RadioInk’s TechINK awards. “The TechINK judges selected products that met radio broadcasters’ needs in uniquely useful ways,” said Skip Pizzi, TechINK Editor. “They were therefore impressed by the VS Series, but also felt Nautel’s work on Asymmetrical Sidebands warranted special recognition.”
“We at Nautel are very excited and humbled by this recognition,” said Peter Conlon, Nautel President and CEO. “This marks the fourth year in a row that our products and technologies have been singled out for one or more of these awards. We feel that Nautel has the best engineers in the industry, and are proud of their achievements. We also thank our customers for their superb suggestions on new products.”
