Nautel NAB Presentations Tackle Top Digital Topics

Nautel to present four papers on Digital Radio topics including the current debate on higher IBOC injection levels.

March 18, 2008 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nautel personnel will present four technical papers at the upcoming National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas. All four papers will be presented in the Broadcast Engineering Conference (BEC) sessions at the show.

As part of opening day of the BEC, Nautel Research Engineer Philipp Schmid will join a panel from 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM on Sunday, April 13 discussing Radio Technology Advancements. Schmid’s presentation will be “A New Approach to Peak-to-Average-Power Reduction for FM IBOC Transmission.” Schmid states that many broadcasters have yet to transition to IBOC due to conversion costs, and a major cost factor is associated with peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR). “This session will present some novel ways to dramatically reduce PAPR without impacting the IBOC signal,” says Schmid.

On Monday, April 14, the BEC’s Digital Radio Worldwide session will include a presentation from Chuck Kelly, Director of Broadcast Sales at Nautel, titled “Bandwidth & Frequency Allocation Issues in International Digital Radio AM & FM Broadcasting.” Kelly says broadcasters and regulators worldwide are now dealing with issues of occupied bandwidth and the impact of DRM and HD Radio implementation on co-channel and adjacent channel interference. Kelly plans to provide theoretical analysis as well as real world examples relating to this topic, drawing on his many years of experience in international transmitter sales at both Broadcast Electronics, Inc and Nautel.

In the BEC Radio RF and Transmission Systems Session, Nautel’s Eastern USA Regional Sales Manager Gary Liebisch will discuss “Implications of IBOC Injection Levels above -20dB” on Wednesday, April 16. The session runs from 2:00 – 5:00 PM. “The movement to increase IBOC injection to improve overall coverage and building penetration is gaining momentum,” Liebisch says. “This paper will provide installation recommendations and will discuss transmitter performance along with possibilities for enhancing transmission performance through peak-to-average ratio reduction, precorrection and combining techniques.”

Also as part of the Radio RF and Transmission Systems session on Wednesday, Nautel Head of Research Tim Hardy will join Benjamin Dawson, President of Hatfield & Dawson, to discuss “Linear Effects of AM Narrow Band Antenna Systems: Characterization by Direct Measurement and Transmitter Based Equalization.” The two presenters note that spectrum analyzers, which have been heavily relied upon to verify antenna response along with transmitter out-of-band emissions, have problems when relating spectrum measurements at the transmitter output to far field measurements. Hardy and Dawson cite additional problems with existing measurement techniques; the two plan to explore new techniques including the use of a directional coupler, introduction of sub-carrier demodulation techniques, and the use of equalization in the transmitter to mitigate antenna bandwidth limitations.

“We’re pleased that Nautel is able to have such a strong presence in the Broadcast Engineering Conference at NAB,” said Peter Conlon, Nautel President and CEO. “With our theme this year of “Expect More”, these presentations will help deliver on our promise. We’ll also have some exciting announcements in our booth and at our NUG (Nautel User’s Group) meeting.”

Nautel will be exhibiting in booth N7116 at NAB.
